He weaves in brilliant descriptions of the changing
seasons (prompting one reader to write that he could
"smell the salt air in last month's column), regaling his
readers with spectacular reports of shipwrecks off the
coast of Truro and the nefarious deeds of the moon-
cussers, over 50 years ago. He evokes childhood memo-
ries of the two-room Wilder School, scene of many boy-
hood pranks; barefoot trips to the corner drug store for
"Moxie," a much-heralded soft drink; and his first atten-
dance at the ritual backyard hog butchering, in the fall.
"Despite some hyperbole and big dollops of imagina-
tion, no matter how farfetched, his stories dripped with
credulity But Mr. Kane did more than just spin yarns.r/
The (Provincetown) Advocate
Tom Kane was born on April 1, 1916 in Dorcester,
Massachusetts. He moved to Truro at the age of seven
with his mother and brother after his father died. He
was a teacher for 30 years and was elected to the offices
of town clerk and tax collector, positions he held for 40
years. He worked variously in the local liquor empo-
rium, driving the Lower Cape Ambulance, and cutting
cemetery lots, and he played trombone with the Lower
Cape Concert Band. He died in March, 1989.
