William MacQuitty FOREWORD BY ARTHUR C. CLARKÉ It may seem strange that someone who has spent much of his life discussing ways of escaping from the earth should now introduce a book devoted to its beauties. However, poachers make the best game-keepers, and it is no coincidence that we became generally aware of our environmental problems at the very moment when we obtained the first views of Earth from space. As astronaut William Anders said when he returned after circling the Moon in Apollo 8: "We looked back from 240,000 miles to see a very small, round beautiful, fragile-looking little ball floating in an immense black void of space. Something that we needed to learn to handlé with care." We are beginning to learn that lesson, perhaps just in time. Though much has been destroyed, this book shows how much of our planet's beauty, strangeness and wonder still remains. The writing of the text, by my friend Bili MacQuitty has been a labour of love-a tribute to the world he has enjoyed in a busy life of exploring and film-making. I am sure that all his readers will share that enjoyment-and will be equally determined Qto cherish and preserve the planet which, however far they wander, men will always call Home. Arthur C.
