INTRODUCTION
French is the spoken language of about 100,000,000 people throughout the world. It is spoken in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, the Caribbean, North, Central and West Africa, the Middle East, Indochina, and many islands of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Millions more speak French as a second or cultural language. Wherever you go on this planet there will always be someone who will be able to speak French—a truly international language.
This cassette course has been prepared to furnish you with the basic phrases you will need to communicate in French, what you wish to say and what you can expect in reply. The French phrases you will hear when you listen to the cassettes will enable you to make yourself understood and establish communications so that you can explain what you want, find your way about, and make friends in France and other French-speaking countries. The phrases on the cassettes are short, easy to repeat and to memorize. And they are the phrases that French people use many times every day.
The number of words and phrases employed in everyday conversation is surprisingly small, and the vocabulary of this cassette course includes and stresses these. Your repetition of these key phrases will give you an instinctive grasp of how French is put together. It will help you to make your own sentences as you learn new words. You will discover that simply listening, reading, and repeating the sounds of French will give you a head start in speaking modern idiomatic French.
After a brief introduction by Charles Berlitz, the well known linguist, you will hear phrases in English immediately translated into French, repeated twice, and followed by a pause.
